WELCOME GUEST SPEAKERS REV. LORI TAPIA AND GENERAL MINISTER AND PRESIDENT REV. TERRI HORD OWENS

Rev. Lori Tapia serves as the National Pastor for Hispanic Ministries of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), the first woman elected to this position. Additionally, Pastor Lori is a church planter, a community activist and a motivational speaker. Lori serves with a passion for relevantly sharing Jesus, for empowering others while helping them grow into their full call and purpose, and for building and maintaining strong, authentic and faithful relationships. As a lifelong musician, worship through music is at her core as a songwriter and worshipper.

Lori received her Master in Divinity from Claremont School of Theology. Pastor Lori serves as the Hispanic Representative on the International Disciples Women Ministry Executive Committee, and is an active member of the Latino Network of Christian Churches Together, among other advocacy groups. Lori has over 25 years’ experience in community, family and crisis programming in the non-profit arena. Rev. Tapia has brought her vision to fruition in the development of afterschool programs for school districts, homeless programs, as well as domestic violence, substance abuse and other community-based programs focusing on strong communities, empowering the vulnerable, leadership development, family, women and children.

Pastor Lori, who was born and raised on the Arizona-Mexico border, is proud of her Mexican American heritage and has worked bi-nationally to increase awareness and develop programs enhancing quality of life around health issues, youth and family. She brings a holistic approach around the entire family and individual dynamic through the gospel, working extensively with the Latino community and on social justice issues such as immigration, racism, human trafficking, women’s rights and interfaith dialogue. Lori enjoys life, her primary ministry, with her husband, three children (Joey, Alex and Kassandra) and eight grandchildren.  

 

Rev. Teresa “Terri” Hord Owens was elected as the General Minister and President of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in July 2017. She is the first person of color and second woman to lead the denomination. A descendant of one of the oldest African-American free settlements in Indiana and a Disciple since young adulthood, Hord Owens was dean of students at the University of Chicago Divinity School and pastor of First Christian Church of Downers Grove, IL prior to her election.

Hord Owens’ resume includes more than 20 years in corporate America leading diverse teams in data management in health care and other industries before she entered seminary. After ordination, she served 15 years at the University of Chicago Divinity School, shepherding a varied student body in both background and theology.

Hord Owens is widely sought after as a preacher, speaker and workshop facilitator. Her ministry and intellectual interests include a theology of reconciliation, cultural intelligence, developing inclusive and multi-cultural congregations, and the mentoring of young adults. She marked three decades of marriage with Walter Owens, Jr., prior to her election. They are the proud parents of an adult son, W. Mitchell Owens, III.
