The theme of this year's Regional Assembly is COURAGE and is based on two important scriptures: Micah 6:8 and Mathew 5:13-16. We believe as followers of Jesus Christ that we are called to be courageous in giving witness through our lives and our words of what it means to live as a beloved human family. We need to be courageous in lifting up the values of love, compassion, justice and peace so that we can be active participants in God’s redemptive mission in the world.
The 2018 Regional Assembly will be held at First Christian Church, Fullerton, located at 109 E. Wilshire Avenue, Fullerton, CA 92832. The City of Fullerton is conveniently located near the 57 and 91 freeways in North Orange County, approximately 25 miles east of Los Angeles.
This Regional Assembly website has been created as an environmentally responsible way to get you the information you need to plan your day. Dear friends and family in Christ;
Prayer and planning are continual aren’t they? Preparation for the next Regional Assembly begins as soon as the previous one ends. Two years ago, with the theme “I Am the PSWR,” the Region gathered celebrating and affirming the endless imagination of God, as revealed through Disciples’ magnificent and outrageous diversity.
In 2017, we Pacific Southwest Disciples attended the Regional Gathering. And we came celebrating our essential unity around Christ’s table with the theme: “We are the PSWR.”
As we move toward the 2018 PSWR Regional Assembly, it is no secret that the Disciples community of faith is troubled by the polarization and appalling lack of kindness that our communities, our country and our world is experiencing. Even as the church is being questioned, misquoted, and even suspected, we believe that God calls us to be brave and audacious in proclaiming the open and welcoming Word of God as never before. To that end, the 2018 Regional Assembly planning team has selected as the Assembly theme: “Courage.”
The 2018 Regional Assembly will take place on October 19-20, at the First Christian Church of Fullerton. Friday morning, PSWR Regional Ministers, the Reverends Don and Susan Gonzales Dewey will open the assembly preaching from the theme: “The Courage to Listen.” Friday evening Civil Rights activist, and Poor People’s Campaign leader, the Reverend Dr. William Barbour, will be preaching from the theme: “The Courage to Change.”
At Saturday morning’s worship, Disciples young people will have charge of the worship experience. They will lead the entire assembly from the theme: “The Courage to Speak.” (This will be a great service to make sure that all of the children and young people from your church attend.) And finally Saturday afternoon, the General Minister and President of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), the Reverend Terry Hord Owens, will preach and charge the Assembly from the theme: “The Courage to Act.”
The scriptural text for Friday is Micah 6:8. The text for Saturday is Matthew 5: 13-16. The 2018 Regional Assembly worship chair is the Reverend Caleb J. Lines.
The workshops will compliment the worship. They are being geared toward enabling courageous transformation in our churches and in our individual lives. The reports from the various Disciples units, and the resolutions presented for voting at the business meeting are being designed to bring greater clarity to who Disciples are, thereby emboldening Disciples to speak and be Divine wholeness to a dangerously fragmented world. Find our truth, find our courage; find our words!
This is an important assembly for every Disciples church and every Disciples member. Plan now to be at First Church, Fullerton, ready to reconnect with God, and each other, in a life changing way!
