
Church In Society Committee The Church in Society Committee meets five times a year on the third Friday of every other month, with no meetings held during summer months of July and August. The committee is composed of approximately 10 individuals. Areas of Work: (many are annual) Martin Luther King Celebration: The next MLK Celebration will be Sunday, January 16, 2004, at McCarty Memorial Christian Church, Los Angeles, at 4:00 p.m. The annual offering provides c. $1,000 for Higher Education Scholarships, historically for Chapman University students. Camile Funds Proposals: A new process designated the CIS Committee with the responsibility to seek and recommend social service programs for the expenditure of c. $14,000 annually from the Camile Christian Church Endowment Fund. El Salvador House Build: March 4-13, 2005, will be the sixth year that a group of 10 will travel to Central America to help build houses where natural disasters have occurred. This trip, as was the first two “home builds”, will be to the Honduras, where Hurrican Mitch devasted many. Disaster Task Group: The Pacific Southwest Region has a disaster task group available to respond to disasters that affect our congregations and units within the region. Information concerning Sexual Orientation Reconciliation Program: Reconciliation
grants are intended to help initiate new and/or existing projects and are
awarded to congregations and church-related or non-profit community-related
projects designed to contribute to Disciples of Christ's covenant "to be
an anti-racist/pro-reconciliation church" and to eliminate racism in church
and society. Funded through the Reconciliation Mission Offering, funds
are received in Disciples of Christ congregations across North America
from the last Sunday of September through the first Sunday of October.
